Wine.woot and 2006 Havens...oh my!

I've just found the deal of a lifetime! Wine.woot is a cool site that offers quality wines at great prices. Sometimes, the wines are only about $2-3 less than in stores, sometimes comparable if sales are going on. But this week, they are offering a very well-known wine that typically goes for $20 or more at Specs for only $10 a bottle! Of course, it comes in a pack of 4, but when did that ever become a problem?

What is it? Havens vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

The Syrah variety of this wine was probably one of the first ones I tried that was out of my price range. It came highly recommended and I decided to be a little adventurous - especially since I had just gotten paid that day. Let's just say - it was so freakin' amazing!!! The flavor was bold and changed with every sip. Leaving it out in a glass for 2 hours made it better, not worse like typical wines. As such a deep red, I would recommend pairing with a nice, juicy steak or a smoky gouda.

Hurry though! Havens has recently liquidated and sold their vineyards - so this wonderful juice is no more. Thus the reason for the incredible price drop. Grab some before they're gone!

Price: $39.99 for 4 on Wine.woot
Rating:  5 out of 5 glasses

P.S. If these varieties aren't your thing, the woot founders are hinting that they will be offering more to choose from in the coming weeks! I'm anxiously hoping that a syrah will appear. Happy wooting!

Middle Sister - Rebel Red

Finals are finally over and I found myself with time and energy to cook. 20 minutes later, a dish of pasta carbonara was on the table, and a wine pairing was in order. And so our quest begins....

This lovely red was the one that started this mission. Bought because it was cheap and made me think of the middle sister in my family - quite a rebel herself - I was unsure of what to expect. Surprisingly, the flavor was full-bodied and was fruity without being too sweet. It's a mix of the common red wines - zinfandel, syrah, merlot, cabernet sauvignon. I generally don't like mixes since I love the tastes of each type of wine individually, but this one was able to show off all of them at once. Mixes are generally a good go-to wine since they can be paired with practically anything. This one went really well with pasta, though any meaty, flavorful foods would be great too.

So go pick up a bottle today! At only $8.99, you can afford to grab 2 or 3 - and trust me you'll want to.

And so begins our quest to change the world...well the college world at least

It all started at one of those so-called "classy" college parties. Josh (the boyfriend) and I looked at all the cheap wine offered  - from boxes of Franzia to handle-sized bottles of piss. There must be something out there that's good yet cheap, right? And a late night text started the idea for Save the Cork! Where did the name come from? It's a phrase I'm always yelling at the bf after I read this troubling news. Can you imagine?! Also, natural corks are a  sustainable industry, but more on that later.

This blog is dedicated to introducing poor college students, or even the classy yet savvy folks, to wine that is less than $10 but does not taste like earwax. Sure, we'll review the occasional $15 bottle here when we find one we have to brag about. But, we've both been spoiling ourselves lately, and our bank accounts show it. Thus, the second purpose of this blog.

So readers, we will sacrifice our livers for the sake of your wallets. Boxes may make an appearance, so don't fret. We strive to open a new bottle a week - maybe 2 - and aim to give a full review, along with sarcastic comments here and there to keep you intrigued.
